We bring all trail users together to protect access to public lands and restore the places we love.

Whether your saddle’s on a horse or a hardtail, your hook’s in a trout or your boots on a trail — you’ve got a seat at this table.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about showing up.

We’re here to do the work. Together.

Public lands. Ours to protect.

Welcome to the Northern Rockies Trail Project

We’re here to break down barriers — between user groups, land managers, and the old ways of doing things — and get real work done on the ground.

The Northern Rockies Trail Project brings everyone to the table to build a shared vision for keeping our forests open and our trails rideable, runnable, walkable, and wild.

Whether you’re saddling up a horse, throttling a Honda, or lacing your boots — if you care about access, we’ve got you.

We’re not just building trails.
We’re building trust, community, and a future where the backcountry stays open for the next generation.

What We Do

Unite Trail Advocates

We bring together a wide range of trail users to build consensus, prioritize projects, and speak with a unified voice.

Mobilize Volunteers

We empower individuals and groups to participate in trail work, helping reduce maintenance backlogs, improve trail quality, and build new connections.

Connect Communities

We work to connect rural towns, neighborhoods, trailheads, and public lands through stronger existing systems and the development of new, thoughtful trail corridors.

Create Local Jobs

We employ local youth and adults in trail building and maintenance, growing outdoor careers and strengthening rural livelihoods.

Collaborate with Land Managers

We partner with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, State of Idaho, and local land trusts to coordinate planning, align on needs, and implement solutions that respect ecological, cultural, and recreational values.

Build and Maintain Trails

From clearing fallen trees to constructing new routes, we keep trails open, safe, and welcoming—strengthening the bond between people and wild places.

We’re linking trailheads, towns, and people through a connected network of existing and new trails that support both recreation and rural economies.

At NRTP, we believe the best stewards of public lands are the people who use and love them. We put that belief into action by mobilizing local communities, trail users, and volunteers to care for the landscapes we share. It’s public lands, cared for by public hands.

Who We Are

The northern rockies trail project (NRTP) was founded to bring people together—to break down silos and create a shared vision for trails that benefit everyone. Rather than approaching land managers with competing or overlapping ideas, we work collaboratively to define priorities and present unified, community-backed solutions.

Our work spans lands managed by the u.s. forest service, bureau of land management, the state of idaho, and local land trusts like kaniksu land trust. Together, we’re helping connect communities across the idaho panhandle—integrating existing trails with thoughtfully planned new corridors.

Our strength comes not just from funding but from people: volunteers, partners, and professionals who believe in building trails and relationships that last. Through shared work, we help land managers address growing maintenance backlogs, enhance current trails, and responsibly expand access for future generations.

But we’re more than just trails. Outdoor recreation is a powerful force for rural vitality. Through local trail crews made up of youth and adults, we’re creating jobs, building skills, and ensuring that the landscapes we love are cared for—today and tomorrow.

We’re supported by individuals, businesses, and philanthropic foundations, along with state and federal grants. Every hour volunteered and every dollar invested helps build trails, create jobs, and strengthen the connection between people and place.
